GARDEN GUEST HOUSE
Location: Yakima, Washington
Type: Residential
Photography: Taj Howe
This project creates a layered and highly personal retreat centered around a private pool and small guest house. Designed in close collaboration with the clients, lifelong friends of the architect, the project balances architectural clarity with an evolving garden crafted by the homeowner, a master gardener.
The project includes a one-bedroom guest house with a half bath and living space. The architectural detailing was aligned with the main home, to create a continuation and familiarity. Planters and planting pockets were intentionally incorporated to soften the paved areas and allow the garden to weave into the built elements. The terraced site strategy manages the slope while allowing room to conceal pool equipment below the pool itself.
The space, in sunny Eastern Washington, is used often by the homeowners and their grandchildren and reflects both personal history and long-term stewardship. The environment has grown richer year by year through the ongoing involvement of the homeowner and her gardening.
