SOUTHWORTH RESIDENCE

Location: Southworth, Washington
Type: Residential

Located on a south-facing bluff in Southworth, Washington, the Lee Residence was designed for a couple moving back to the Northwest after spending time in warmer states. The site overlooks the water with a clear view toward Mount Rainier and sits high above the shoreline on a steep, forested slope. Working closely with geo-technical engineers, the design brings the house as near to the edge as possible while meeting setback requirements and stabilizing the terrain.

The program includes two connected dwellings to support the family’s specific needs. The main house was designed for the couple, while a smaller, attached dwelling was created to support family. The two structures are linked by a shared breezeway enclosed in glass that allows for connection and privacy at once. A common arrival court serves both homes, with a carport and garage arranged for shared use.

Inside the main home, a compact and efficient plan reflects the clients’ wish for a modest footprint. Spaces were continually refined to eliminate excess, resulting in a house that feels generous in experience but disciplined in scale. The design includes an elevator connecting all three levels, ensuring accessibility throughout. The upper level houses two bedrooms, while an additional bedroom sits below grade. The kitchen anchors the main floor; a space tailored for the client’s passion for baking.

The home is designed to feel bright and almost transparent, bringing the surrounding forest and views deep into the living spaces. Shed roofs open the interiors toward the view, and large areas of glazing extend the connection to the outdoors. The palette focuses on natural woods and muted tones, grounding the building in a sense of calm. The home finds balance between precision and simplicity, feeling both personal and deeply tied to its landscape.
